Meadow Hill Behavioral Health is a 16-bed residential mental health program for teens ages 12 to 18 at 74 Coles Meadow Road in Northampton, Massachusetts, about an hour north of Hartford. We serve families from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and across New England. This page answers what Connecticut parents ask us most: how far it is, who the program is for, how insurance from a Connecticut plan usually works, and how to stay involved.
If your teen is in danger right now, call or text 988 or go to your nearest emergency room. Residential treatment is not emergency care.
Meadow Hill is for adolescents whose needs have outgrown weekly therapy or an outpatient program, but who are medically stable enough for a residential setting rather than a hospital. Connecticut families usually come to us after an inpatient psychiatric stay, when the hospital team recommends a step-down; when outpatient care, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or partial hospitalization hasn’t been enough; or when depression, anxiety, self-harm, trauma or mood and behavioral symptoms are making home, school and safety hard to manage.
We treat depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADHD, psychosis, ODD, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, borderline personality traits and parent–child relational problems, along with appropriate co-occurring substance use. The program is built only for teens.
Each teen’s plan includes individual, group and family therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management, two hours of schooling a day on weekdays, and case management. Meadow Hill is accredited by The Joint Commission (ID #734243) and licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), License #9204553.
Northampton is in western Massachusetts, straight up I-91 from Hartford. Approximate drive times without heavy traffic:
| Starting from | Distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Hartford | about 50 miles | about 1 hour |
| Waterbury | about 80 miles | about 1.5 hours |
| New Haven | about 85 miles | about 1.5–1.75 hours |
| Norwich / New London area | about 90 miles | about 1.75 hours |
| Danbury | about 105 miles | about 2–2.25 hours |
| Stamford / Greenwich | about 125–130 miles | about 2.25–2.75 hours |
Amtrak’s Vermonter and Valley Flyer trains run from New Haven and Hartford to Northampton, and the Vermonter also stops in Stamford and Bridgeport. Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks is the closest major airport. For most Connecticut parents, family sessions and visits are an easy day trip.
When a teen needs residential care, families often need a bed soon, and private residential options for adolescents can be limited close to home. Meadow Hill keeps no waitlist and accepts admissions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so we can usually review a referral quickly and tell you plainly whether we’re the right fit. A little distance can also help: your teen gets space from the people, places and routines tied to the crisis, while you are still close enough to be part of treatment.
Connecticut hospital teams are welcome to call admissions to talk through a referral before a family decides.
We work with PPO out-of-network benefits. Free insurance check in 24 hours.
Families are part of treatment. Parents take part in treatment planning and family therapy (weekly, by phone, video or in person) and get regular updates from the team. Teens have two phone-call times each day, and after the first week of adjustment families can arrange on-site visits with the treatment team. School keeps going too: teens get two hours of schooling a day on weekdays, and the team works with the home school on assignments and the return to school. Discharge planning begins at admission, so your teen comes home with next steps in place, such as a therapist, psychiatrist or step-down program near home.
